Nei giorni scorsi si รจ fatto un gran parlare dei velisti a pedali presentati da Emirates Team New Zealand. Ma avere messo dei winch che funzionano spinti dalle gambe e non dalle braccia รจ solo uno degli aspetti da affrontare per fornire la potenza necessaria a bordo del catamarano. Perchรฉ il vero motore รจ proprio nelle gambe dei grinder, ormai giร ribattezzati cyclors, crasi tra cyclers, ciclisti, e sailor, velisti.
La cosa piรน difficile, fanno sapere dal sindacato neozelandese in lizza per la prossima Coppa America, รจ stata tenere nascosta non il lavoro sulle barche, ma la quantitร e l’intensitร dell’allenamento che nell’ultimo anno e mezzo ha spostato la preparazione dei grinder dalle braccia alle gambe. Perchรฉ da un po’ di tempo i kiwi lavorano sodo sull’argomento.
L’allenatore fisico del team, Hubert Woroniecki, ha seguito la transizione dei marinai da velisti a cyclors con l’aiuto, offerto sotto copertura, di Simon van Velthooven, medaglia di bronzo per la Nuova Zelanda alle Olimpiadi 2012 nel ciclismo su pista.
“L’allenamento sui pedali รจ iniziato da piรน di 18 mesi. All’inizio รจ stata una sfida bilanciare la richiesta fisica per avere una regolare fornitura di potenza ai grinder della nostra prima barca test, mentre li stavamo trasformando in ciclisti. Ora i ragazzi vanno in bici tutti i giorni, modulando l’allenamento su diverse durate e intensitร , insieme ad altri tipi di impegno, In alcune particolari sessioni sono spinti al loro limite fisico assoluto di resistenza e sforzo in sella”, spiega Woroniecki.
โAbbiamo puntato molto sulle bici da indoor, le Watt Bikes, per rimanere nascosti alla vista dei molti visitatori e curiosi – ha detto ancora Woroniecki – e non destare sospetto, ma c’era bisogno di uscire dalla base e buttarsi sulla strada con le biciclette.โ
โSiamo usciti in gruppo per lunghi giri in bici che sono stati utili sia come allenamento fisico sia come momento di team buildingโ, racconta l’allenatore. “Una pedalata di 200 km, da Auckland a Coromandel, il piรน veloce possibile, da compiere insieme รจ un sistema per essere sicuri di essere reciprocamente leali e di prendersi cura dei compagniโ.
Finora non era stata data nessuna indicazione sul reale tipo di allenamento seguito dai kiwi per aumentare la forma e aumentare la fornitura di potenza in situazioni di estremo stress mentale e fisico.
“Sono test brutali”, racconta Joseph Sullivan, medaglia d’oro a Londra 2012 nel canottaggio. “La richiesta energetica รจ paragonabile a quella di una gara di canottaggio, arrivi al tuo limite fisico in cui il tuo corpo ti urla di fermarti, ma tu devi stare lรฌ e continuare ad andare”. D’altra parte, come dice il nostro Alex Zanardi: “Quando pensi di avere dato tutto, tieni ancora cinque secondi”.
Glenn Ashby, lo skipper di ETNZ รจ stato molto motivato da ciรฒ che ha visto esprimere dalla nuova generazione di giovani generatori di potenza.
” Iragazzi stanno davvero facendo tutto il possibile – ha detto lo skipper – ย per vincere questa Americaโs Cup. Aiuta avere gente come Joe (Sullivan, ndr) che sa quanto devi dare per vincere una medaglia d’oro di canottaggio ed รจ fondamentale che i nostri possano confrontarsi direttamente con luiโ.
Sebbene i cyclors siano un gruppo davvero coeso, sanno anche che sono in gara l’uno contro l’altro per aggiudicarsi uno delle quattro selle installate a bordo della barca che andrร a competere. “Stanno dando davvero il massimo”, conclude Woroniecki, โSono tutti estremamente competitivi a si spronano in maniera davvero positiva. Prima di tutto viene l’equipaggio e questo approccio รจ quello che li spinge a voler essere un gruppo migliore all’interno della collettivitร della squadraโ.
