The bay of Ses Illetes is located in the northern part of Formentera, facing west. This side of the island is characterized by its lack of relief; in particular, the Trucador peninsula is a complex of sand dunes, on either side of which are Ses Illetes and Levante beaches, the two most famous and crowded beaches on the island. Levante beach is constantly buffeted by winds, although not too strong, so it is a paradise for anyone practicing windsurfing and other water sports.
Formentera’s Sant Francesc is the beating heart of the island, and its largest housing development. La Savina, the island’s port, is the closest town to the two beaches, just two nautical miles from Ses Illetes and four miles from Levante Beach. This area is a true paradise for yachtsmen, characterized by pristine, virgin beaches that are completely deserted, tongues of sand with lush vegetation, and breathtaking, remote coves.
Formentera remains a favorite Mediterranean resort for nudists and naturists, who frequent its beaches in droves, thanks to permissive legislation in Spain.
A network of pedestrian and bicycle paths, true “green circuits,” has been installed throughout the island’s territory, traversing it far and wide for a total of more than 45 kilometers, allowing people to get to know its places more thoroughly and in complete harmony with nature.
The most popular of these routes, the “Camรฌ de Ses Illetes,” passes through the wonderful Salinas Park, leading to the island’s most beautiful and famous beaches. The route skirts incredible natural landscapes, passing through the sand dunes and pine forests of the park, skirting in particular the salt flats of Formentera, a really interesting place, although currently disused.
Ses Illetes beach is located about 3 nautical miles from the port of La Savina, on the western side of the island of Formentera. Specifically, this area is part of the Trucador Peninsula, located between Punta des Pas and Platgeta des Carregador. “Ses Illetes” beach means beach of islets, this name is due to the five islets that protect the bay.
From the coast it is therefore possible to identify five islets, the best known of which include “Illa des Ponent,” “Illa de Tramuntana,” “Escull des Pou,” and “Illa Rodona,” in the southern part of the bay, while to the north it is possible to locate the famous Islet of “s’Espalmador,” a true unspoiled and uninhabited natural paradise.
The bay of Ses Illetes is a very special place; it is part of the NaturalArea of Special Interest of the Salinas Natural Park, as the posidonia prairie that covers the seabed has been declared aUNESCO World Heritage Site. This pristine and marvelous habitat is populated by a rich and numerous variety of marine fauna, an element of attraction that makes diving enthusiasts flock from all over the world.
The beach and the natural environment that surrounds it are a true paradise on earth: the very fine white sand and crystal-clear, breathtakingly turquoise waters are reminiscent of the colors of Caribbean islands. Precisely because of this, the beach is one of the most crowded in Formentera, along with its twin beach Levante, which is located exactly on the opposite side of the sand tongue.
