Cala Fontanelles

Cala Fontanelles is a small U-shaped bay located along the northwest coast of the island of Menorca.

In its northwestern part it is enclosed by the promontory of Punta Blanca, while in its southern part it is bordered by Punta Denmig. The islet Escul de Ses Vinyoles, on the other hand, is located just in front of the cove, making it easily recognizable for those coming from the sea in their own boats.
The cove is part-along with other inlets-of a larger bay, which extends from the Punta de Fra Bernat and Punta Rotja.
The seabed of the cove has little slope and is composed mainly of pebbles and sand, The seabed is good tenors, not very deep and allows for safe anchoring.

The winds that blow over the area are north, northeast and northwest, but the natural conformation of the bay offers good general protection from currents and calm waters. These characteristics make the cove a popular destination not only for boaters, but also for scuba diving and snorkeling enthusiasts.

The other bays in the immediate vicinity are Cala S’Escala (closest for those coming from the west) and Cala d’Algariens, the easternmost bay.

At the bottom of the bay lies a beach composed of sand and pebbles, flanked by a space for the storage of small fishing boats.
The beach (like the entire bay) is surrounded by low rock walls and vegetation. Cala Fontanelles is located in a very sparsely urbanized area, and its beach does not offer any kind of service. You can get to the bay by starting from Cala d’Algariens and walking along the coastal path.
Its being “wild” and the lack of services make it a destination that is not very crowded, even during high season.

Cala Fontanelles is located about 11 kilometers from Ciutadella and is part of an area of special natural interest, protected by the Balearic Islands government and the European Union.
