Baia di Portonovo

Portonovo Bay is located in the Marche region in the province of Ancona. The area is beautiful and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Adriatic Sea, very organized from all points of view.

There are many local associations that offer all kinds of information and entertainment for the many tourists who come to vacation in these parts.

The natural bay is protected from the north by a cliff more than 1 km long of which only 700 meters are emerged and the others are below sea level. This long rock wall is called “The Beams” and bounds the northern part of the bay.

At the southern end is a wide beach on which stands a crenellated tower, called the “Watchtower,” which was built in 1716 to thwart pirate raids.

In later years, this tower was used by artists and poets as a spiritual retreat, including the vate Gabriele D’Annunzio where he composed the novel L’acqua tace set in Portonovo.

There is also a pier on the beach about 25 meters long perpendicular to the coast where, however, docking is prohibited except in cases of extreme necessity; boats can drop anchor along the reef The Beams, redoubled by all winds from the northwest.

It is possible to anchor at a minimum distance of 50 meters from the coast along the entire area close to the reef for about 200 meters on the Portonovo village side.

The anchorage’s seabed is muddy and gravelly, not very deep and fairly even, and the winds that can bother are those from the north and northeast.

There are two yellow flashing buoys in the Anchorages that mark underwater artificial reefs, and there is an area of very shallow water with semi-outcropping rocks that is not marked.

The pebble and stone beach is equipped with bathing establishments and all kinds of services, including restaurants, bars, stores and toilets. The Conero Riviera is world-renowned for its wild and unspoiled scenery and the sea is clear and transparent awarded the blue flag.

In the Conero Regional Park, all possible beach and sports activities can be enjoyed, and just a few kilometers away is the well-equipped city of Ancona with its port.

To contact the port, one must tune in to VHF channel 16 or send an e-mail message to ancona@guardiacostiera.it.
