Enclosed in the eastern part by the Pointe de la Fossette, the Baie de la Fossette is part of the district of the same name in the Town of Le Lavandou, a renowned French Riviera resort in the Var department.
The cove is smaller in size than the nearby and more famous calanques (west of the Fossette is Calanque Du Four des Maures), but it is also quieter and less crowded than the other bays in the area, especially in the summertime.
The bay is well sheltered from the easterly winds and mistral, but as it is very open to southerly winds and currents, in the event of southerly swell, it is best to forgo anchoring here and move to the Cavalaire-sur-Mer area.
As in many other areas of the department, the Var administration has set up in front of the bay’s beach an organized mooring area, with a total of 20 berths, where anchoring with dead bodies is prohibited and only those types of anchors that do not damage the seabed are allowed.
The Baie de la Fossette is an integral part of the territories of Natura 2000, a European organization that deals with the defense of threatened or particularly rare marine ecosystems.
The fact that it is less renowned than other better-known “colleagues” does not detract from the charm of the Baie de la Fossette, which offers visitors magnificent views of the Mediterranean scrubland, pretty buildings and verdant mountains that surround it.
The beach is located in the central part of the inlet, is made up of sand and small stones and is generally calmer than the other beaches of Le Lavandou.
In the center of the beach is a private bathing establishment where it is possible to rent beach equipment , but there is no shortage of free areas in which to set up without paying.
There are toilets and a few refreshment stands on the beach.
For those coming from the mainland, there is a parking lot not far from the beach.
Leaving the car here you can then continue on foot along a pleasant path surrounded by vineyards.
La Baie de la Fossette is a good, quiet and un-chaotic starting point for exploring Cap Bénat and the islands of the Parc National de Port-Cros.
