Located west of Bandol and flanked to the west by the Calanque du Port d’Alon, the Baie de la Moutte is a fairly wide inlet.
The bay is completely open to the south and offers no shelter from winds from this direction . Instead, it offers excellent shelter from northern winds-including the mistral-and from westerly winds.
The seabed is largely made up of sand and posidonia meadows and are decent tenors, a detail that allows the bay to be considered a good spot to give anchor even at night, but avoiding areas where posidonia is present.
The bay is part of the Conservatoire du Littoral, a public body run by the municipality of Saint Cyr to preserve the local marine ecosystem.
As one of the most pleasant spots in the Bandol area in which to stop by boat, the passage of boaters here is very intense-especially in the summertime-but diminishes considerably as evening falls. To enjoy the tranquility of the bay therefore nothing better than to stay at anchor here for the night, provided the swell from the south is not too intense.
The whole bay is surrounded by high red rock cliffs, topped by thick green pine forests.
The bay is home to only one practicable beach: the plage de la Moutte, which is small and made up of pebbles. The beach has a wild appearance, does not offer any kind of service and is extremely quiet because access by land is quite difficult: one must necessarily start from the plage du Port d’Alon in the nearby bay of the same name and then take the coastal path that in about thirty minutes will lead to the beach de la Moutte.
However, the beauty of the crystal-clear water and the tranquility of the place are worth the trip.
The other beach present is the plage de la Galère, located in the eastern part of the inlet, on the shores of the point of the same name.
Access to this beach, however, is currently prohibited.
The cove is also a popular destination for hikers and scuba divers.
La Baie de la Moutte can be considered an excellent starting point to reach Saint Cyr sur Mer and the La Ciotat area.
