Located at the northeastern tip of the island of Port Cros, Baie de Port Man is one of the few spots on the entire island where it is possible to give fonda.
In fact, Port Cros is part of the Parc National de Port Cros et Porquerolles, an underwater site created to safeguard the local flora and fauna, where Anchorages is strictly regulated and prohibited on much of the 1200 hectares of protected territory.
Even in some areas of the bay it is formally forbidden to anchor: these are the areas where the seabed is strewn with entire posidonia meadows, but they are well marked by some buoy fields.
Baie de Port Man represents an excellent place to give fonda also because it is well sheltered from almost all the winds that blow on the island.
The cove is well known to boaters who sail the stretch on the French Riviera in the area of the Hyรจres islands (of which Port Cros is a part) and is very popular during summer periods.
Since it is well sheltered from the winds, a good idea may be to anchorage in the anchorage in the evening and spend the night there if the weather is favorable, thus taking advantage of greater calm and tranquility.
Port Cros can also be reached by ships that depart year-round from Hyรจres and arrive at the island’s port.
The Port Man inlet area, however, does not have many services: to find restaurants, a few stores, and a hotel, one must necessarily approach the town and the island’s only landing place, located in the Baie de Port Cros.
The ports is equipped with piers and an organized area of buoy moorings and is exposed to the mistral wind.
The lack of nearby amenities is undoubtedly compensated for by the magnificent view of the lush, unspoiled nature that surrounds anyone who lands in this cove. Port Man beach, in the central part in the cove, consists of small pebbles and is the furthest on the island from the town center but can also be reached by land.
In fact, the bay is part of a bicycle and pedestrian route called the “circuit des forts,” a circular route that can be covered in about 4 hours and leads from the bay to the area of the forts to the west of the island, passing through the beautiful Mediterranean forests of the hinterland and in the vicinity of the town center.
One can also indulge in a little “off-track” from time to time to discover some particularly charming place, such as the Pointe du Tuf, characteristic for its travertine panorama, or some hidden corner where one can stop and rest.
La baie de Port Man is the ideal anchorage place for boaters who love wild and unspoiled nature.
