Isola di Olib – Baia San Nicola

St. Nicholas Bay is the best place on the island of Olib (Ulbo) to find shelter and anchor. Redoubt from bora and all winds except those from the west, however, not frequent. Good bottom holding. Also present is a small pier at the end of the bay with a 2-meter draft. The bay is named after the Benedictine monastery of the same name erected in the 12th century. The area is inhabited only in the summertime, and there are about a dozen buoys available at a cost of about 10 kuna (for each meter of the boat) plus 5 kuna each for tourist tax. 8 meters deep. Wanting to walk to the center of the island, it is possible to reach the main settlement in about 40 minutes by following the appropriate path.

When at anchor, one should expose the black balloon during the day, although this is a rule that is often not observed, while at night one should turn on the white light. It is also good to remember to do a compass check by surveying a couple of conspicuous points on the shoreline to check that the anchor is not plowing. Finally give cable for a length equal to 4 / 6 times the depth of the water, depending on conditions.

At the island there is also a small port of the same name, compared to the choice of the bay here you are less protected but in addition you can find water and electricity, garbage and oil hexosexual storage, as well as a couple of restaurants. Beware of water, there is no natural spring on the island so this comes from wells or rain. There is also a pier to which it is possible to dock with depths of 2.5 to 4 meters, watch out for the passage of the ferry to Zadar. Marked at night with white and red flashing light three seconds. From the village it is also possible to easily walk to the other side of the island to see Slatinica (see video below), one of the most recognized tourist spots in the area. You can also reach Slatinica by boat but the area is usually busy, the cost of buoys is always 10 euros per meter but you also pay for anchorage, 5 kunas per meter. Avoid stopping overnight, no protection from winds.

The locals are friendly and it is possible to buy typical local products from the farmers themselves. There is a marked difference between the medieval ruins, houses of locals from another era, and some new buildings of tourists, inhabited only at certain times of the year. The supply of vacation homes is quite extensive.
