Osor (Ossero) is an anchorage that does not offer the best shelter, however, it has a strategic location. It lies just before the navigable channel (Cavanella channel) built by man to separate the islands of Cres and Lusssino. Osor in fact takes its name from a Roman city that was flourishing and glorious at the time and was located near the canal. The passage avoids a bypass route around the island of Lošinj and shortens the route for those who, for example, are heading to Novaljia on the island of Pag. The anchorages in Osor are an ideal place to wait for the bridge to be lifted (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The closed bridge is just under a couple of meters high. Beware of the five-knot speed limit when crossing the channel. Boats coming from the south have the right of way and those waiting must maneuver or anchor so as not to interfere with boats that are passing through. The channel is twelve meters wide and about three meters deep.
If you decide to anchorage in the Osor anchorages, you must be careful of the bora, which can be very violent. In this case it is necessary to lay a cable ashore. In the stone quay you can moor but there are no services and it is exposed to the undertow. At the dock you put in bow or stern, only for boats with a shallow draft. Coming from the north at night refer to a flashing red light 3 seconds (Osor Bay) and a flashing red light 1.5 seconds (beginning of channel). Coming from the south the passage is just under 50 meters wide at first and then narrows to 12 on the channel. At night it is marked by green and red flashing lights on both sides two seconds.
The neighboring island of Lošinj is worth a visit, first and foremost for its small sandy beaches (hard to find in Croatia), but also for the typical Mediterranean macchia and fresh air. The island is not as touristy as Istria, but a number of hotels and campsites have been developing in recent years; still, quiet, secluded places can be found. Seafood restaurants on Lussingande are very popular, offering a sea view and decent prices as well as excellent quality fish. Connections on the island all depend on a single road and so it is more practical to use a boat to visit places.
