The anchorage of Riva Trigoso is located opposite the town that has become famous for being home to numerous shipyards. The town is a hamlet of Sestri Levante in the province of Genoa and is often identified with Fincantieri, one of Italy’s oldest and most prestigious shipyards.
On the beach in front of the town is the headquarters of the shipyards, and in the anchorages in front of it boats can be moored from the coast to Punta Manara. About two hundred meters from the beach in front of Fincantieri is a yellow marker buoy, which indicates the presence of an underwater pipeline that is used to suck in water to cool the shipyard’s equipment. Mooring, underwater activities, and swimming are prohibited around this buoy.
The Gulf of Riva Trigoso is bordered by two headlands: punta Baffe to the east and punta Manara to the west. The town used to be a fishing village, but given its beauty and clear sea it has become a popular tourist destination, partly because it is less crowded than in other better-known areas.
The beach near the anchorage is free and quite crowded in summer. There is certainly no shortage of space as the total length is about 1.5 km, and there are also a number of equipped bathing establishments. Public toilets, drinking water, boat repair and hauling services are available for boaters. The village lacks nothing and one can stop by for a visit and purchase supplies.
The sea at Riva Trigoso is also enjoyed by divers, snorkelers, and fishermen. The underwater seabed on the side of the two points bordering the Gulf is rich in burrows, and about three hundred meters off Riva Trigoso there are shoals with a cap of about 25 meters that are very popular. Numerous boats are stationed around these shoals for swimming or fishing. Special attention must be paid to the many divers, although they are always clearly visible from the floats anyway.
From the anchorage of Riva Trigoso one can reach many places of incomparable beauty, such as Chiavari, Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino to the north, Moneglia, Deiva Marina, Levanto and the Cinque Terre to the south. In summer, this stretch of sea is busy with both boaters and regular ferries that take tourists and travelers along the coast to Corsica or Sardinia. However, the Ligurian Sea is one of the quietest and cleanest on the peninsula, and the anchorage is sheltered from currents and winds.
