Cala Domestica

The anchorages of Cala Domestica are located on the southwest coast of Sardinia in the municipality of Buggerru in the Province of Carbonia-Iglesias. There are two beaches on the coast joined by a passage in the rock, and the place is so beautiful that commercials have even been filmed there.

The beach is located 2 km from the town of Buggerru and is characterized by a seabed that remains shallow for several meters, making it popular with families with children. The beach is soft and compact and stretches for several meters inside a natural inlet that ends with typical Sardinian vegetation of shrubs and Mediterranean scrub.

The sea is spectacularly iridescent in color between azure, turquoise, and cobalt blue, and apart from several meters of shallow water, in the anchorage the seabed drops to fairly deep depths. On either side of the anchorage of Cala Domestica are high cliffs of crags, and in the sea one must be careful of a few rocks near the shore.

This area has one of the most beautiful seas in all of Sardinia and is very popular with divers and diving centers because of its changing seabed rich in vegetation and all kinds of fish. The two beaches are joined by a passage in the rock that was dug by miners in the last century and joins two coves, one of which is slightly smaller than the other, but has the same characteristics of white, golden and amber sand set between high cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation.

On the left promontory of the bay is an ancient Aragonese tower dating from the 17th century that was also used in times of war as a lookout point. In addition to the cave dug by miners, the remains of warehouses that were used in the last century to work in the mines can be found on the beach. Cala Domestica was an important docking point for ships that transported ore mined in the area.

The beach is quite well-known and popular, and there are eateries, bars, restaurants, and parking lots. There is even an RV area, and there are campgrounds and tourist accommodations not far away. There is a boardwalk to get to the beach, so one can easily imagine the overcrowding there is during nice days.

The place should be avoided when the mistral blows because otherwise it becomes very difficult to get out of the anchorage because of the waves that form. The anchorages of Cala Domestica are protected from winds coming from the east.
