Calamosca

The Calamosca anchorage is located south of Cagliari in close proximity to the city. It is a very convenient anchorage when the nearby ports are overflowing as is often the case in August. Theclosest ports are Marina del Sole to the west inside the city, and the small marina of Marina Piccola, located further east on the other side of the promontory just at the beginning of Cagliari’s Poetto beach.

Calamosca’s anchorages are sheltered from winds in the fourth and first quadrants, however wind exposure makes it a regular destination for surfers. The seabed is predominantly sand and posidonia, with depths varying from 3 meters outside the swimmable zone. The modest depth of the seabed, combined with the ease of descent to the sea from the coast, make the anchorage a popular destination for divers, to whom great care must be taken when maneuvering within the anchorage.

Ashore, the Calamosca anchorage offers the opportunity to take advantage of a good restaurant, an excellent ice cream shop, and a nightclub.
Landing in the Calamosca anchorage can be done very easily by put of a tender. Also ashore, Calamosca anchorage offers a lovely beach of coarse-grained sand lined with cliffs. Given its proximity from the city, the ease of parking, and the possibility of renting umbrellas and deck chairs, the beach is a regular destination for Cagliari swimmers, who are joined by the many tourists in search of Sardinia’s wonderful beaches.
In the summer months Calamosca beach can therefore become very crowded so, to fully enjoy the peace offered by this earthly paradise, it is advisable to avoid the month of August. In any case, other coves less beaten by swimmers can be found in the immediate vicinity of the Calamosca anchorage, skirting the coast towards the east, in the direction of Poetto, where at last the colorful colors of the umbrellas do not interfere with the cool blue of the sea and the warm tones of the Sardinian summer coast.

Finally, ashore, the walk along the Sant’Elia hill, also called the “devil’s saddle,” through the remains of historic buildings overlooking the bay and the city is worth mentioning. Starting from the Calamosca tower and its lighthouse, located at the top of the promontory, one proceeds along a path through anchorages of Mediterranean scrub to the top of the hill, where stand the remains of the Fortino di Sant’Ignazio, an unfinished military work from the 1700s, of which the perimeter of the fortification walls remains.
