The Tharros buoy field is located right in the area adjacent to the famous archaeological site in the municipality of Cabras, in the province of Oristano. The area possesses a very exciting setting, from the bay to the above-ground ruins that tower over the entire site, giving historical charm to the entire coastline.
Usually reached by land, however, the area is also coveted by pleasure boats coming from Torre Grande or the famous Caletta di Torre Vecchia. The extension of the ruins of Tharros territory also extends under the water.
As a result, to protect the heritage of finds dating back to the Punic age, a special buoy field has been demarcated for boats that decide to moor near the site. A well-defined area that can accommodate up to 100 berths.
Since the coast remains distant to those mooring in the buoy field, the area is recommended for those who do not then intend to visit the sub-coast and the site of the resort. For the latter, it is advisable to dock directly at the port of Torre Grande and then drive to the site.
Moreover, the whole area is characterized by an important presence of benthic biocoenosis. This aspect gives the anchorage a great responsibility in the possible impact on the vegetation of the seabed. A risk of damage that has therefore seen the need for the very careful placement of buoys in charge of ‘ mooring.
Often the destination of a famous itinerary in the area that sees navigation on the entire Costa Verde, Tharros has often been closed to navigation or mooring. Especially after serious cases of ‘accidents near the buoy field due to maneuvers by boats helmed with inexperienced hands. In fact, enthusiasts recommend making a stop at the convenient port of Torre Grande, in case one arrives from the Island of San Pietro and plans to reach Tharros at the end of the long navigation.
The Tharros buoy field is as famous as the site to which it belongs. A piece of history and tradition within reach of those with an interest in admiring its postcard. It is not set up for recreational or bathing activities.
