Cala Rotonda owes its name to the almost spherical shape of the bay. The anchorage is located in the western part of the island Favignana, the largest and most important of the Egadi Islands archipelago in the province of Trapani in Sicily.
The cove is characterized by the presence of an arch called Ulysses’ arch, the result of erosion given by wind and salt spray. Of the many anchorages around Favignana’s 33 km of coastline, cala Rotonda is among the least known and least frequented.
There are numerous rocky outcrops in the anchorages, and special attention must also be paid to the shallows. It is mandatory to moor quite far offshore, but still you will be sheltered from the winds because the coast is quite high and rocky.
When the wind blows from the north, many boats heading to Cala Rossa take refuge here, where there is excellent protection from winds and currents. The anchorage is also ideal for spending the night at anchor.
The place is wonderful, the beach consists of sand and pebbles shaped by the tides, the water is clear and warm with a regular bottom and endless shades of blue. The sea is pristine and numerous species of fish can be seen even close to the shores; almost all diving here is undemanding and suitable for everyone.
There is a cave at a depth of about 8 meters that is popular with divers. The dive begins at the entrance to the cave underwater and continues in a channel about 30 meters long that ends in a pool in the reef of the cove.
Another very interesting dive spot is the Toro shoal, which is reserved for the more experienced because of the currents and in any case biogna always go there accompanied by someone and never alone.
The Corrente rock gets its name from the very strong currents that flow through it and is perhaps the most beautiful spot in cala Rotonda in which to dive; it is also popular with spearfishers because it is populated by all kinds of fish and crustaceans.
In addition to diving, swimming and sunbathing can be done in the anchorages of Cala Rotonda, preferably while remaining in the boat, at least on days when the beach is so crowded that there is no free corner.
Ashore in the vicinity there is nothing, so it is useless to go down to find bars or stores. The place is quite secluded and very popular especially in rough seas, since thanks to the fact that it is sheltered from the currents it is a quiet place even when you cannot moor or swim elsewhere.
