Baia del Rogiolo

Rogiolo Bay is an almost hidden anchorage located in the middle between Romito Tower, a promontory famous for the presence of Sonnino Castle, and a small hill overlooking the sea. The bay was created naturally at the mouth of a small stream of the same name, which, unlike this type of stream with a small bed, allows water to flow year-round due to the presence of a small spring upstream.

The origin of the name of this creek, hence of the bay, refers to the local term for lizard. This golfetto, due to its hydromarine characteristics, is very suitable for free diving enthusiasts: the crystal clear water allows long observations of the underwater fauna, and the absence of danger and difficulty also allows reaching two small caves to experience the feeling of swimming under the hill.

The seabed is rocky all the way to the shore where the stones become smaller, but there is easy access to the shore thanks to a ladder from the lido of the same name present at the foot of the promontory.

Right at the mouth of the creek, in fact, there have been Rogiolo baths since 1961, winners every year of the Blue Flag title for the quality of the water in front of the establishment.

This is a bathing complex also equipped for handicapped access, with fine gravel and a small sandy area that allows the rental of umbrellas, deckchairs, chairs, and cabins partly placed on concrete terraces and partly on a beach of small stones. Behind the bathhouse are the bar, restaurant, and pizzeria. Fortunately, there is also a freely accessible portion of the beach to enjoy this small stretch of sea.

This bay, with no moorings, is well sheltered from wave motion by the protection from the mistral of the Sonnino promontory. From here, access to the anchorages is by an easy concrete walk along the rocks, using the descent from La Baracchina restaurant, which connects Rogiolo Bay to the Quercianella marina. There is also a road, owned by the State Railways, which is not accessible to cars and to which, however, there are a few hundred meters left to walk.

About 200 meters to the south, along the same concrete promenade, is the small port of Quercianella-name of the locality in the Livorno area where this portion of the coast is located.

On the north front of this marina, there is also a small beach with a saltwater pool obtained by arranging an ad hoc stone barrier, which is particularly suitable for children to play without risk
