Cala del Gesso

Cala del Gesso is one of the most beautiful coves around the promontory of Monte Argentario, in the province of Grosseto, and is easily reached by boat. Reaching it on foot is very difficult, so the place is not overly crowded, except on holidays in warm weather.

The beach in front of the Anchorages is one of the most beautiful in all of Argentario and consists of very small smooth pebbles and sand. The beach is free and there are no facilities; on the far right are the remains of a 16th-century Spanish tower.

Across from the beach is Argentarola Island, which is exactly opposite the headland of the anchorage cala Moresca, another spectacular landing place on Mount Argentario. On the small island at a depth of 23 meters there is a cave that is much visited by scuba diving enthusiasts.

To reach Cala del Gesso it is worth starting from ports Santo Stefano and coasting all along the Argentario in order to admire the spectacular scenery and crystal clear water of the Tyrrhenian Sea. You will encounter numerous small beaches set amidst the rocks that are practically impossible to reach by land and still wild and unspoiled.

On the way to the Cove you will pass Giannella beach and then the baths of Domitian, also called Gerini beach, a pristine stretch of sea where you can still see the remains of ancient Roman tanks where fish were raised. Nearby are also the remains of an ancient Roman villa from 36 B.C.

A little further on will be Soda beach, another area popular with divers, and finally the spectacular scenery of Cala del Gesso, an inlet amidst rocks facing a beach of polished pebbles and sand, will open up.

The seabed is not very deep and consists of stones, rocks, sand and posidonia. The anchorage is sheltered from winds and currents and attracts many boats since it is one of the most beautiful corners in all of Mount Argentario.

The sea is transparent and populated with all kinds of fish, and the seabed presents a changing and very impressive scenery. The area is frequented by diving enthusiasts, because from the rocks you can jump into very deep water without any danger.

To the south is the cove of Cala del Bove, another wonderful wild place, perfect for snorkeling. To the north is Cala Grande, the busiest anchorage in all of Argentario, which is very wide and there are three pebble beaches with thick vegetation behind them. Cala del gesso is one of the most beautiful places to moor in Tuscany.
