Cala delle Caldane, also known as Caldane Beach, is located on the southeastern side of Giglio Island. It is a very private anchorage with a small portion of fine, light-colored, coarse-grained sand that can only be reached by sea or by a nearly 40-minute walk through an adventurous, uneven path through the vegetation overlooking the sea.
Around the anchorage, lovers of solitude will enjoy a succession of coves and creeks with rocks sloping down to the sea. This is a cove with wild and very private features that, evidently, is often uncrowded, in which a spectacular sea dominates from turquoise and emerald tones, crystal clear and transparent, with sloping sandy bottoms rich in posidonia, ideal for swimming and snorkeling lovers.
So during the busiest tourist periods this beach, thanks to its difficulty in reaching it, always gives a bit of tranquility and a breathtaking landscape with flourishing nature and behind it the mountains that rise to the highest peaks present on the island of Giglio.
Those who decide to venture on the small path south through the few villas in the Mediterranean scrub, will reach after a few meters a stepped cliff on the sea where one can easily descend to swim and is especially recommended for those with dogs in tow who cannot transit the beaches.
A few minutes’ walk further are the Acque del Prete rocks, a special, wild and particularly peaceful place, so named for the natural pool of green water set in front of a granite leach where the port priest used to bathe. Precisely because of the uniqueness of this beach whose absolute tranquility evokes faraway places, there are purposely no bars, restaurants or kiosks on site except for a rental service of sunbeds, umbrellas, pedal boat rentals and canoe rentals.
There is lifeguard assistance and lifeguard for rescue and the free beach is still available to all. So to spend a day at the Caldane, it is necessary it is good to leave equipped with provisions and water although since it is connected by a path to the adjacent Cannelle cove in a twenty-minute walk it is possible to refuel at the bar.
In 2013, the Ministry of the Environment included Cala delle Caldane among the 17 most beautiful beaches in Italy, giving important recognition to what has only ever been considered a small island beach.
