Fetovaia Bay is one of the most famous and popular anchorages on Elba Island, both by sea and land. The crystal-clear water and white sand of the beach framed by Mediterranean scrub make up a postcard landscape of contrasting colors. The wind on this side of the island is usually highly variable, alternating gusts and gaps that complicate sailors ‘ lives but draw them inexorably.
The bay of Fetovaia is located in the southwestern part of the island of Elba, in the center of the stretch of coastline known as the Costa del Sole. The bay is protected to the south by a long, narrow, low promontory composed of red rocks covered with Mediterranean scrub, which stretching for a long stretch of sea offers natural shelter from most winds. The bay remains exposed to southeasterly winds, but offers a good shelter for all other winds and is a safe anchorage even with a tense mistral.
The approach to Fetovaia Bay for anchoring presents no particular danger or difficulty. The seabed is sandy, about 20 meters deep at the entrance and sloping in a regular maneira towards the beach. At a distance of about 200 meters from the coast the depth is 5-10 meters. Anchorages in anchorages are allowed in the right (northern) part of the bay, while it is prohibited in the southern part beyond the buoys. The landing lane for tenders is located on the northern side of the bay and should be used absolutely not to compromise the safety of bathers, who are numerous especially during the weeks of peak summer season.
Fetovaia beach is a half moon of white granite sand, surrounded by rocks and crowned on land by dense pine forests and woods. The village of Fetovaia, which lies immediately behind the beach, is busy especially in summer, and offers all services: banks, bars and restaurants, stores, and cabs.
Fetovia Bay offers a chance to enjoy both the marine and terrestrial beauty of Elba Island. It is possible to spot numerous schools of fish with a simple dive from the boat, while for more experienced divers there is the possibility of diving to see groupers, lobsters and a suttomarine cave on the east side of the promontory (numerous diving centers on the island organize excursions to this area). On land, it is possible to plan excursions and walks to discover the interior of the island along trails of varying length and difficulty that run along the valleys of Mount Capanne, which rises behind Fetovaia.
