The port of Baratti is an anchorage located between Punta del Molino and the Hill of Populonia. It takes its name from the homonymous Gulf of Baratti, an extremely verdant area characterized by crystal-clear waters. Behind the gulf is an immense pine forest populated with maritime and domestic pines, in whose central area it is possible to locate a very ancient necropolis.
A short distance from the port of Baratti are the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia and the medieval town of Populonia Alta, which are also within easy walking distance. The history of Populonia is ancient. It was, in fact, the only large Etruscan town to overlook the sea: already during that era there was a small landing place for boats coming from the island of Elba and laden with ferrous materials that, after being processed, were sent off to reach places located all along the Mediterranean basin.
The anchorage is characterized by a sandy and rather shallow seabed. This makes it accessible only to boats reaching a maximum length of 14 meters. There are 700 berths offered by the Port of Baratti, of which 63 are for transit. All berths are provided with lines: three at the bow and two at the stern.
A cab service is offered to enable customers to reach their boats. During the hours when the cab service is not operating, small rowboats are made available for customers to move from the dock to the boat.
In the immediate vicinity of the anchorage it is possible to find a refreshment station including tobacco sales. A little further away, however, there is a grocery store, a center where routine maintenance can be performed on boats, and centers offering sailing or diving courses.
Within the anchorage, drinking water supply and garbage collection are provided. There is also a slipway for hauling boats, a telephone booth and a parking lot designated for cars.
Taking the anchorage as a reference point, it is possible to set out to explore the many inlets and reefs of the gulf, as well as the many wonderful islands within easy reach such as Palmarola Island, Cerboli Island, Capraia and Elba Island.
The coastline is fully illuminated by the Baratti lighthouse, activated during the early 1900s for the purpose of lighting the northwestern stretch of the Piombino promontory.
Within the Gulf of Baratti is also the Circolo Nautico Pesca Sportiva Baratti, founded in 1989 by enthusiasts who have always moored their boats in the crystal clear water of the gulf. The aims of the Circolo Nautico are especially the preservation of the natural environment, safety and rescue of boats in difficulty.
