E’ solo grazie all’intervento della U.S. Navy che una coppia di diportiste di Honolulu, รจ stata tratta in salvo il 25 ottobre scorso dopo 5 mesi passati alla deriva.
Jennifer Appel, Tasha Fuiaba ed i loro due cani, erano partite in primavera da Hawaii diretti a Tahiti dove sarebbero dovute arrivare con una traversata di circa 2.300 miglia nautiche.
Il 30 maggio una forte tempesta ha reso inservibile il motore della loro imbarcazione ma le due donne hanno deciso di continuare comunque, contando solo sulla propulsione a vela.
Dopo due mesi di navigazione, essendo ancora molto lontane sia dalla loro rotta che dalla destinazione prevista, le due donne hanno cominciato a trasmettere giornalmente chiamate di emergenza ma, a causa della loro distanza da altre imbarcazioni, nessuno รจ stato in grado di ricevere le loro richieste di soccorso fino al 24 ottobre quando fortunatamente, un peschereccio Taiwanese ha ricevuto la richiesta di soccorso e l’ha subito ritrasmessa alla Guardia Costiera di Guam.
Da quel momento in poi si รจ attivata la macchina dei soccorsi, il Taipei Rescue Coordination Center, il Japan Coordination Center ed il Joint Coordination Center in Honolulu hanno lavorato insieme ed individuato nell’ USS Ashland (LSD 48), nave della marina statunitense, la nave piรน vicina per prestare assistenza alla coppia di donne in difficoltร .
L’Ashland ha quindi navigato alla massima velocitร di crociera fino alle 10,30 del 25 ottobre quando, a 900 miglia a Sud-Est del Giappone, hanno raggiunto le naufraghe. Dopo aver constatato che l’imbarcazione della coppia di donne non era in grado di navigare, i militari hanno imbarcato Jennifer Appel, Tasha Fuiaba ed i loro due cani, a bordo dell’Ashland. “Sono grata per il servizio della US Navy alla nostra nazione, ci hanno salvato la vita” dichiara Jennifer Appel “L’orgoglio e la felicitร quando abbiamo visto l’Ashland all’orizzonte sono stati incomparabili”.
“La U.S. Navy รจ in grado di prestare soccorso ad ogni marinaio di qualsiasi nazionalitร in ogni tipo di condizione” affermaย Steven Wasson, Comandante dell’ Ashland che รจ parte della 7ma Flotta d’istanza nell’area di Sasebo in Giappone.
Appel racconta che sono sopravvissute alla situazione grazie al dissalatore d’emergenza e alla grandissima scorta di cibo che avevano imbarcato. La coppia di donne aveva infatti stivato in cambusa una grande quantitร di cibo disidratato, principalmente farina d’avena, pasta e riso. Una volta a bordo dell’Ashland la due donne ed i loro cani sono stati visitati dal medico di bordo e, subito dopo, rifocillati.
Jennifer Appel, Tasha Fuiaba ed i loro due cani rimarranno gradite ospiti a bordo della nave della marina fino al primo porto d’attracco previsto.
