Il lancio di una nave da crociera ecologica รจ stato annunciato qualche giorno fa da Peace Boat a Parigi, sede della conferenza ONU sull’ambiente, oltre che del Salone Nautico. Il progetto si chiama Ecoships e risponde ad un’esigenza sempre piรน sentita nel mondo del trasporto marittimo: la riduzione delle emissioni.
Il tema non รจ semplice: da piรน parti si sono levate richieste affinchรจ l’IMO (International Maritime Organization) si faccia carico della gestione di uno sforzo globale per la riduzione delle emissioni di gas serra nel settore dello shipping. Tale gestione va comunque inserita in un quadro che non รจ privo di regolamentazioni: la Commissione Europea ha preso negli ultimi anni decisioni piuttosto severe riguardo i limiti per le emissioni della navi da trasporto (merci e persone), fissandoli a livelli inferiori rispetto al resto del mondo. Qualche armatore l’ha presa male, lamentandosi dei costi, qualcun altro si รจ adeguato e adesso chiede che le istituzioni verifichino che tutti rispettino i limiti. E ovviamente il mercato si muove dietro alle regole, proponendo varie soluzioni: dai filtri per rendere piรน puliti i motori di vecchia generazione, ai motori alimentati da combustibili ecologici (LNG, metanolo, etc), fino all’ausilio delle care vecchie vele.
Peace Boat, la ONG giapponese che a Parigi ha proposto il progetto Ecoships, ha fatto un passo avanti: si รจ affidata allo studio spagnolo Oliver Design e ad un team di ingegneri per progettare una nuova nave da crociera a emissioni praticamente dimezzate (-40% rispetto alle navi costruite prima del 2000), ad alimentazione ibrida con lโausilio di energia solare e eolica. La nave potrร trasportare 1.500 passeggeri e avrร una stazza lorda di 55.000 tonnellate. Come da mission di Peace Boat, il progetto ha come scopo dimostrare che รจ possibile vivere e viaggiare in modo responsabile, sperando che il loro esempio venga seguito anche da altri armatori: il turismo puรฒ essere un veicolo di cambiamento, dicono, e farlo in modo poco impattante sull’ambiente รจ essenziale.
E in effetti loro lo fanno da oltre 30 anni (e nel 2008 sono anche stati nominati al Nobel per la Pace), per la precisione dal 1983, quando un gruppo di studenti universitari giapponesi decise di rispondere alla censura che il governo aveva imposto sulle attivitร militari nell’area dell’Asia-Pacifico: noleggiarono una nave per andare proprio nei luoghi delle aggressioni militari, toccare con mano e cominciare a parlarne. Da allora Peace Boat ha noleggiato diverse navi da crociera, l’ultima delle quali รจ “Ocean Dream”, costruita in Danimarca nel 1981, giร “Costa Tropicale”, e compie numerosi viaggi che hanno uno scopo sociale ed educativo oltre che ricreativo.
Con il nuovo progetto, Peace Boat diventerebbe societร armatrice di una nuova nave, decisamente piรน in linea con la propria missione: dotata di motori ibridi di ultima generazione, pannelli solari e generatori eolici, sistemi di riutilizzo delle acque, nessuno scarico in mare. Un progetto affascinante e ambizioso dal punto di vista ingegneristico, che ha scelto di ispirarsi ai piรน antichi abitanti del mare – le balene.
