Un velista non udente, il suo gatto (ottimo marinaio) e il giro del mondo

Un inseparabile trio: Paul J. Thompson, Skatty e La Chica. Nell’ordine: un velista inglese, classe 1957 e non udente; un gatto di razza Maine Coon a pelo semi lungo lungo; ย un Thaiti Ketch di 10 metri disegnato dall’americano John Hanna nel 1932 e costruito dallo stesso Thompson.

Negli ultimi 15 anni Thompson ha tutti gli oceani con la missione di fare il giro del mondo e soprattutto di dimostrare che il non sentirci non รจ un limite assoluto. Si puรฒ navigare. ย Thompsonย ha un suo sito, Sailingwithoutsound, dove racconta la sua vita, vita che negli ultimi anni รจ stata allietata dall’arrivo di Skattty.

E’ nata presto una simbiosi tra i due, e il gatto dร  una valida mano (zampa) al suo comandante. In particolare Skatty nel tempo ha imparato a segnalare a Paul, toccandolo con una zampetta sul ginocchio, l’avvicinarsi di una barca, se qualcuno bussa, se arrivano nuovi messaggi sul telefono. Ha semplicemente capito che il suo padrone-skipper non ci sente.

E’ difficile, per un gatto, la vita a bordo? Secondo Thompson la cosa piรน importante รจ farlo avvicinare al nuovo ambiente lentamente. Le prime volte deve salire a sulla barca per brevi periodi, poi piรน a lungo. Si devono abituare a situazioni moleste, ad esempio il rumore dell’avvio del motore.
