Ice Boat, a vela sul ghiaccio
Funzionano come delle vere e proprie imbarcazioni a vela, ma, il loro scafo, non si immerge in acqua. Se lo fa, come vedremo,รจ un vero problema!
Stiamo parlando diย Ice Boat, particolari imbarcazioni che, per navigare, scivolano sulla superficie del ghiaccio. Sono loro le veloci protagoniste della nostra rubrica video settimanale.
Le ice boat nascono alla fine del 1800 come imbarcazioni per trasportare le merci durante la stagione invernale, attraverso i grandi laghi ghiacciati. Successivamente, poichรฉ decisamente veloci e divertenti, sono diventate imbarcazioni ad uso ricreativo.
Oggi le ice boat sono molto diffuse nei paesi nordeuropei e nelle regioni dei grandi laghi nordamericani.
I semplici appassionati di queste barche sono tanti, cosรฌ come sono molti anche gli agonisti che scelgono ragatare in ice boats.ย Pensate, al recente campionato mondiale svoltosi aย Lake Indian Hills in Ohio, le barche iscritte erano ben 110!
Il video che vedete qui sotto, in cui loย sventurato protagonista incontra un punto in cui il ghiaccio si รจ sciolto, รจ infatti girato durante un allenamento in vista della regata. Il risultato รจ un incidente impressionante.
La barca si infila bruscamente in acqua, dopo aver perso improvvisamente tutta la sua forte velocitร . Il timoniere viene proiettato in avanti e colpisce, oltre alla barca, la parte di ghiaccio che andava a riformarsi proprio davanti a lui. Fortunatamente era protetto dal casco, ha evitato danni seri, anche se la “botta” l’avrร di certo sentita.
Le velocitร che riescono a raggiungere le ice boat sono altissime. Lo scafo appoggia su pattini sottili che permettono all’imbarcazione di scivolare sulle superfici ghiacciate, facendo pochissimo attrito. Una caratteristica che, unita al peso contenuto dell’imbarcazione e alla generosa superficie velica, permette ai moderni scafi da regata di raggiungere velocitร superiori ai 50 nodi.
Le immagini delle regate sono infatti spettacolari. Queste si svolgono tra le boe e le regole sono quelle classiche, ad esempio chi ha le mura a destra ha, anche qui, la precedenza. L’unica differenza evidente, rispetto ad una regata sul mare, รจ che, al segnale di partenza, l’imbarcazione va inizialmente spinta a mano, come se fosse una slitta.
