Abbiamo scovato una bella storia grazie agli amici di Yachting Magazine (una delle piรน antiche riviste di yachting, pubblicata dal 1907), e ve la riportiamo. ร la storia di come tutti noi siamo arrivati a muoverci liberamente sull’acqua con i nostri amati motori fuoribordo, ma comincia con una irresistibile voglia di gelato…
Si narra che nell’estate del 1906 un giovane macchinista 29enne, Ole Evinrude, abbia invitato un’amica per un pic-nic su un’isoletta a circa un miglio di distanza dalla riva su un lago del Wisconsin. Ovviamente ci si poteva arrivare solo in barca, remando: il che era anche un’ottima tecnica di seduzione (ancora consigliata! ndr.), ma risultรฒ un po’ meno efficace quando alla ragazza, Bess, venne una gran voglia di gelato. I remi non si dimostrarono abbastanza veloci e Bess mangiรฒ un gelato sciolto arrivato dopo troppo tempo.
Pare sia stato questo l’episodio che ha ispirato Ole Evinrude a costruire, nel 1909, un motore fuoribordo da 1,5 cavalli che poteva far muovere una piccola imbarcazione ad una velocitร compresa tra i 3 e i 6 nodi. Non era il primo motore fuoribordo: Cameron Waterman nel 1906 ne aveva giร prodotto uno, e altri ci stavano lavorando da quando erano stati introdotti i motori a combustione. La differenza tra gli altri fuoribordo e quello di Evinrude la fece Bess che, da brava donna attenta al futuro, capรฌ subito che dell’invenzione si doveva fare qualcosa di concreto e cominciรฒ a passare parola ben aldilร dell’officina in cui Ole lavorava e costruiva i propri motori.
Fu sempre Bess a capire che presto i clienti, cosรฌ come lei era stata esigente per il gelato, sarebbero diventati esigenti per i motori fuoribordo, e la coppia si impegnรฒ a migliorare costantemente il prodotto. I problemi di stivaggio furono risolti progettando un motore pieghevole. I problemi di rumorositร e usura delle parti furono risolti inventando la protezione esterna. E cosรฌ via: motori fuoribordo sempre piรน veloci, piรน potenti, sempre piรน grandi, poi sempre piรน piccoli, sempre piรน leggeri, sempre piรน ecologici, ancora fino a oggi.
Alla fine, ovviamente, Ole e Bess si sono sposati.
