Il progetto ormai รจ sulla via di definizione ed รจ anche stata ipotizzata, in linea di massima, ย la data della prima traversata atlantica, prevista per la primavera del 2020. Fra breve inizieranno i test in vasca sui modellini e poi, se tutto andrร bene e se gli sponsor non faranno marcia indietro, il trimarano Mayflower, alimentato esclusivamente a energia solare e eolica senza equipaggio, verrร costruito.
Quando salperร , nel 2020, saranno esattamente passati 400 anni dal viaggio della prima Mayflower, il galeone a tre alberi con cui i padri pellegrini salparono da Plymnouth, in Inghilterra, il 16 settembre del 1620 per raggiungere, dopo due mesi di navigazione atlantica, Cape Cod negli Stati Uniti. La stessa rotta, da Plymout in Inghilterra a Plymouth negli Usa, sarร percorsa dalla nuova Mayflower.
Questa volta perรฒ, il trimarano non sarร condotto da uomini in carne ed ossa ma da una combricola di droni, che governeranno la barca in tutte le sue funzionalitร .
Il progetto รจ frutto di una collaborazione fra l’universitร di Plymouth, l’azienda MSubs, che costruisce mezzi marini e sottomarini tra cui il sottomarino senza equipaggio piรน grande del mondo, e lo studio di design, Shuttleworth design.
Il trimaranoย sarร lungoย 32 metri e largo 16, con una superficie velica di 159 metri quadrati che dovrebbe consentirgli una velocitร ย fino a 20 nodi grazie a carene che dovrebbero ridurre al minimo la resistenza in acqua.
Esperimenti del genere sono giร stati realizzati con modelli. Il trimarano, quando sarร varato, sarร il primo scafo di dimensioni reali ad attraversare l’Atlantico in superficie senza equipaggio.
“Mayflower opererร come piattaforma di ricerca –ย ha detto Kevin Jones della Facoltร di Scienze e Ingegneria dellโuniversitร di Plymouth – conducendo numerosi esperimenti scientifici nel corso del suo viaggio. Sarร un banco di prova per il nuovo software di navigazione e per le nuove forme di propulsione dellโimbarcazione, in particolare sperimenteremoย lโuso combinato di energia ricavata dal sole, dal moto ondoso e dal ventoโ.
Come detto si tratta della prima volta che un esperimento di questo genere viene realizzato con una imbarcazione. Sino ad oggi, l’oceano Atlantico รจ stato attraversato senza equipaggio da velivoli e mezzi sottomarini, ma mai in superficie, dove le variabili, soprattutto del moto ondoso, sono maggiori.
La sfida รจ quella di dimostrare che รจ possibile, grazie alle tecnologie, realizzare un mezzo marino completamente autonomo dal punto di vista energetico e in grado di essere governato da droni e non da esseri umani.
Per la costruzione del Mayflower i progettisti hanno previsto due anni di tempo, piรน un anno per i test. Insomma, i tempi per celebrare con una traversata i 400 anni del viaggio della Mayflower, sono stretti ma senza intoppi potrebbero farcela.
Secondo stime del tutto teoriche, in condizioni ottimali la traversata potrebbe durare dai 7 ai 10 giorni, anche se i progettisti sottolineano come il loro interesse sia quello di raccogliere piรน dati possibili lungo la navigazione, visto che non ci sono problemi per la permanenza in acqua da un punto di vista dell’approvvigionamento energetico nรฉ da quello della sopravvivenza umana.
