Navi commerciali a guida autonoma? Le vedremo tra meno di dieci anni. Parola di Rolls-Royce

Oceani frequentati da navi senza equipaggio? Fantascienza? Sembrerebbe proprio di no. “La questione è semplicemente quando, non se. La diffusione delle navi autonome, a guida remota, è certa. E’ il futuro“. Non ha nessun dubbio Oskar Levander, Vice Presidente  del dipartimento Innovation Marine di Rolls-Royce. Lo ha dichiarato nel dell’ Autonomous Ship Technology Symposium 2016 di Amsterdam dove ha presentato l’Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications Initiative (AAWA), un vero e proprio libro bianco sul’argomento: “Entro dieci anni vedremo questo progetto realizzato. In questo momento stiamo testando un’infinità di sensori nei mari della Finlandia per simulare una conduzione del tutto autonoma delle navi commerciali. In tutte le condizioni climatiche possibili“.  I sensori sono installati a bordo dello Stella, un Finferries di 65 metri a due ponti che al momento naviga tra Korpo e Houtskar, ovviamente in Finlandia.

Non si tratta di una semplice trovata mediatica, di rendering e filmati ad effetto. Il progetto coinvolge realtà di ricerca come Tampere University of Technology, la VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd, la Ã…bo Akademi University la Aalto University e l’University of Turku, ma anche realtà industriali non come Rolls-Royce (che non è la stessa delle automobili, è un colosso che opera in tutti campi del trasporto e dell’energia, con un fatturato da 13,4 ,miliardi di Sterline), Brighthouse NAPA, Deltamarin, DNV GL e Inmarsat.

Nel libro bianco vengono affrontati tutti i problemi che questo genere di progetto può comportare: si parte dagli aspetti di sicurezza, a quelli legali, passando anche da quelli di ingegnerizzazione industriale, vengono affrontate delle simulazioni sul medio e lungo periodo.
