Formentera is one of the four main islands of the archipelago of the Balearic Islands, and is also part of the Pitiuse group of islands.

Theisland was settled by the Romans, who exploited it as a granary and wheat store because of the great fertility of its soil. Its vegetation is predominantly Mediterranean, and this small island has the distinction of being almost entirely flat: only one noteworthy relief can be identified, the Mola plateau, which reaches an altitude of 192 meters, almost a hill.

La Savina, before the construction of the ports, was just a small islet, which was joined to the rest of Formentera by the construction work.

Just next to the Ports is a wide and busy lagoon called “l’Estany des Peix” by the locals, a perfect place foranchoring small boats or boats with minimal draft: in fact, the mouth of the lagoon is 20 meters wide and only one meter deep. It is a place that is fairly sheltered from southerly winds, but not sheltered enough in case of strong disturbances.

Formentera is one of the main tourist destinations in the Mediterranean; in the summer season it attracts an industrial amount of tourists thanks to its wonderful crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches, as well as its strategic proximity to Ibiza, which makes it possible to visit both in one stay. In addition, Formentera is frequented by tourism of a more family-oriented nature, as this resort is less tied to the chaotic world of discos, typical of Ibiza.

The main centers of interest on the island are Es Pujols, the island’s tourist hub, and Sant Ferran de ses Roques, a residential area but also a well-known hippy destination as early as the 1960s.

A little trivia about Formentera: the island remains a favorite destination for naturists throughout the Mediterranean. Many of the island’s beaches are frequented by these types of bathers, thanks to the permissive legislation present in Spain, which allows naturism in many areas of the country.

Formentera Mar S.A. is a merchant company that was incorporated on September 21, 1992, which is responsible for managing and selling 90 berths in the Formentera marina. In addition, the company manages a total of 8 accommodation complexes located in the island’s Salinas Natural Park.
