Porto di Porto Cristo

The port of Porto Cristo is located on the east coast of the island of Majorca, the most historically relevant since it was colonized in the time of the Roman Empire. In recent years, in fact, numerous archaeological finds have been unearthed in this area: near the port, going about 2 km up the creek, it is possible to see the remains of a Roman pier and a boat. In 1934 the remains of an additional boat, loaded with amphorae, were discovered, in which a lead plate was also found.

The earliest records regarding the cove’s fishermen date back to 1247, and it is also possible to say that, based on the constructions near the coast intended for defense or surveillance, and also based on oral tradition, pirate attacks were constant, until in the 19th century these ended.

This fact, combined with the arrival of fishing families from other Majorcan villages, such as Felantix, Capdepera or Valldemossa, gave a strong impetus to fishing and trade, despite the lack of port facilities . Small boats made use of the bay’s beach, while merchants stayed at anchor in front of the “Cueva des Correu” and by means of a floating platform completed the loading and unloading of merchandise.

For this reason very early on the construction of a pier and a shipyard was claimed. Since 1932, the Port of Porto Cristo has gradually taken on a life of its own, and has constantly sought to improve itself through the construction of new ports buildings, the use of state-of-the-art machinery, and the provision of specific and high-level services. All this guarantees the tourist and customer the best possible welcome and service.

The marina’s infrastructure is managed partly directly by the Balearic Islands government and partly by the Porto Cristo Sailing Club. The structure of this landfall consists mainly of two landing jetties, located at both edges of the cove, along with a seawall used to shelter the area and a containment counterargin. The directly operated part of the government has 259 berths, of which 33 are for transit boats, to which must be added the 213 berths that the Porto Cristo Sailing Club manages.

The most important initiative of the Porto Cristo Nautical Club has always been the dissemination of nautical culture and its practice. For this reason, the institution offers numerous training activities for beginners and refresher and advanced training for the more experienced, through courses and activities that take place throughout the year. In addition to regattas, sailing and swimming courses, one of the club’s special features is its focus on the world of fishing, organizing deep-sea fishing trips almost every month and numerous competitions. The club also has an excellent sailing school for future boaters.
