Crotone Porto Vecchio

Located close to the city to the E-SE, the Old Port encloses a water surface of 66,400 square meters, within the approximately 1,200 meters of quay carved out along the inner bays and the outer reef. It features 5 quays with an area of about 4,700 square meters. The seabed is shallow and sandy and is used by small tonnage boats as a fishing and tourist port.

A shipyard equipped for the construction of small wooden units, repair and maintenance of pleasure boats, and fuel distribution is in operation within the Old Port.

To enter the port, a course must be followed perpendicular to the line joining the two access lights, green flashes the one at the head of the old pier, red flashes at the head of the health pier. Access is difficult with winds from the second and third quadrants, winds from quadrants I and II cause undertow. In summer, high waters portend bad weather from southeast to southwest. The piers abutting the Sanità moletto are an excellent shelter well sheltered from the winds and the sea but are subject to gradual silting. In transit you moor by giving turn at the mooring bollards of the breakwater, being careful of the stone blocks at the foot of the quay.

Crotone, the most important industrial center in Calabria, was founded by the Greeks in 710 BC. The city is situated on the eastern side of the region and faces the Ionian Sea at the mouth of the Esaro River. The old town spreads in narrow alleys and small squares to the cathedral and the central Pythagoras Square, which unites the old and new town. Visit the 16th-century cathedral, the Charles V Castle built on an earlier fortress in the acropolis, and the State Archaeological Museum. 11 km to the south is Capo Colonna, formerly Capo Lacinio where the sanctuary of Hera Lacinia stood.

The Saracen Coast runs southward from the ports to the promontory of Capo Colonna. Le spiagge principali caratterizzate da sabbia fine e mare cristallino sono Cape Colonna, Capo Cimiti, Capo Rizzuto, Punta, Le Castelle enclosed within the Cape Rizzuto Marine Reserve.

Crotonese cuisine uses simple products with a strong and genuine flavor such as Crotonese pecorino cheese, smoked ricotta and chili pepper. A typical dish is U Cuadaru, a very rich fish soup cooked in a copper pot that is accompanied by the full-bodied wines of Calabria, Cirò, Sant’Anna di Capo Rizzuto and Melissa.
