Marina Laghi di Sibari

Located in the center of the Gulf of Taranto, the Marina di Sibari is ideal for sailing to the Adriatic, Sicily, Malta, Greece or Turkey. The Marina consisting of several peninsulas spanning a water surface of 430,000 sq. m. has a total of 15 piers and can accommodate 2,800 vessels on an average bottom of just under three meters. In addition to the normal services, the facility offers a shipbuilding service in the area near the gas station where a mobile crane up to 15 t and a 50 t travel lift are in operation.

Before landing at the Marina, it is necessary to make contact with the control tower, or use the tower itself as a conspicuous point to locate the entrance channel. The tourist complex is located in a coastal lagoon, the Lakes of Sybaris, which flows into the sea through the Strombi channel northwest of the mouth of the Crati River. The entrance to the channel is protected by two piers regularly marked on the head, and the beginning of the access channel is displayed by two lighted buoys. When entering, it is best to follow the instructions of the control tower and ascend cautiously for about 500 meters by entering to the left through a vincian gate. It is not recommended to enter in strong winds between northeast and southeast. The port of Schiavonea is very useful as a shelter and waiting port.

The Sybaris Lakes have a beach about 2.5 km long that can be accessed through the docks by private boat or ferry or by land by shuttle bus or on foot through a walkway within a pine forest. From June 1 to September 30 all bathing establishments are in operation.

Sybaris, founded in the 8th century B.C., was the oldest colony in the Magna Graecia. Today Sibari is a hamlet of Cassano all’Ionio and is located on the same territory as the ancient city. Having become a famous seaside resort, it still preserves the remains of the ancient city thanks to archaeological excavations and a museum. The archaeological site of Sibari, Sybaris, is located south of the town.Sibari is also an important agricultural center thanks to the cultivation of rice, citrus and peaches.

The main ingredient of all the dishes is the fish, but sybaritic cuisine also offers fresh homemade pasta served with delicate sauces, tagliatelle with chickpeas, and homemade bread baked in a wood-fired oven. Typical desserts include cicerata, giurgiulena, turdilli, cannaricolli, vecchierelle, and bocconotti.
