Olib

Olib (Ulbo in Italian) is the port of the island of the same name, which is part of the archipelago of islands located north of Dalmatia some 20 nautical miles from Zadar. The place is very quiet and life here flows slowly, only a few houses of repatriated emigrants clash with the natural environment that has remained intact over the centuries. The inhabitants are engaged in activities such as fishing, farming and animal husbandry, in some cases marked only by personal and family subsistence. Given the limited agricultural area and the lack of water sources, the island has never experienced economic development and therefore there is an absence of motor vehicles and industrial installations.Finally, tourism has arrived only minimally and mostly consists of boaters passing through, in fact for those who want to stay overnight must rely on private homes. It is possible to find some services such as a supermarket, restaurants and a post office. Interesting archaeological finds and evidence of human presence in past centuries, especially the ruins of a Roman village, a church and a monastery.

The port of Olib is located to the west where there is the largest bay on the island, also noteworthy is the bay the of Satinica to the east where lovers of sandy beaches and clear water will be satisfied, excellent for stopping for a swim but not for anchorages at night in the anchorage. At the ports there is a pier on which, however, the ferry that makes the connection with the island of Zadar passes daily, the water depth ranges from 2.5 to 4 meters, at night signaled with white and red three-second flashing light. The pier is clearly visible in the video below from the second 16, from here it can also be easily deduced that at the ports berths are limited and mostly dedicated to medium – small boats. At the pier it is possible to dock at some dead bodies and have water and electricity, both north and south of these there are also buoys. Prices are higher than the average in the archipelago, and the south side of the pier and the various buoys in that area are not protected in case of westerly winds, while the north side of the pier and the various buoys in that area are not protected in case of northerly winds. Between Silba Island and the western tip of Olib pay attention to the cardinal danger sign indicating to keep to the west, thus passing closer to Silba Island, due to a shoal, the night signaled with white twinkling light (9 twinkles) every 15 seconds.

South of the island is the famous white sand beach of Juzna Slatina where you will find clear waters in which to swim, suitable for families with children since it slopes very slowly, also accessible from the ports of Olib with a 20-minute walk along a path. A shoal at the entrance to the bay to the west is noted. There is also a strong presence of aquatic plants in the area, be careful when anchoring to choose a place where there are possibly none.
