Gavdos, Italianized as Gozzo (not to be confused with Gozo in Malta) is the southernmost island in Greece and the southernmost point of Europeand the European Union.
And that reason alone is worth a visit!
Located 26 nautical miles south of Crete, the island of Gavdos is a good idea for a detour to the “extreme” south, in the Libyan Sea to be precise.
10 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide, Gavdos obviously does not have many tourist attractions to offer. Fortunately: the opportunity is there to enjoy its authentic atmosphere, to savor its nature, colors and flavors, to be able to get a glimpse of how people once lived on the island.
There are about a hundred residents in Gavdos, but in reality no more than about 50 can be found in winter. The tune changes in summer, when tourists drive the population to well over 3,000. Nevertheless, you will not have to scramble to make your way around the island. The only cafรฉ open year-round is in Karave, which, fortunately, is also home to the only port on the entire island, a ferry port (which runs daily service from Crete in summer) that does, however, offer some exploitable space for boaters.
The port is located at the northeast end of the small island and is a very “basic” structure: a pier at the breakwater, a piece of banked shore. At any rate on the inner part of the breakwater there is room to moor sideways, the depth is good, 4 meters or so along the entire length. At the banked shore the depth is considerably shallower and in addition there are always local fishermen’s boats.
The shelter within the small ports is good from all winds except those from the east; in summer the meltemi with a northeast direction also dominates here. Getting to the island of Gavdos and entering the ports does not present particular difficulties.
As for services, there is water and electricity at the dock, and there are also small toilets. You can also find many stray cats and dogs, which, however, are not a safety problem. There is no possibility of refueling. A small supermarket completes the basic offerings at Karave ports.
