The port of Anzio is located in the town of the same name on the outskirts of Rome in which Cicero stayed on his return from exile to reorganize the remains of his libraries in a safe place.
The port is only three kilometers from the port of Neptune together with which in Roman times represented the entire port of the city of Antium.
The growing power of ancient Rome is, in fact, closely linked to the history of this port, which over time became a means of adequately supplying it: the commercial needs associated with the development of an empire that stretched across the Mediterranean, with the consequent increase in trade, increasingly challenged the responsiveness of the empire’s capital, a point of reference for major communications.
The Julio-Claudian dynasty began the grandiose ports works from the port of Ostia and a series of works to give a functional layout to the Roman coast. Thus was born the infrastructure necessary for the multiplication of traffic that would also serve, in the long run, for the defense of the Roman beach. It was Emperor Nero, however, who masterminded the creation of the grandiose port of Anzio in which he spent a fortune as all scholars unanimously confirm.
The Anzese port was part of the more complex system of port works built to ensure commercial traffic and especially the influx of grain that was crucial to the stability of Rome’s government. It cannot be ruled out that the Neronian ports, over time, were used by the imperial fleet, since the patrons of the city included Aquilius, admiral of the same fleet. This quick historical excursus clearly shows that the port of Antium had a considerable function, placing it among the most important ports of call in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Currently, the port of Anzio consists of a three-leg pier and a breakwater pier and offers a total of 400 berths for sailboats and yachts, 10 of which are free and 10 for transit, up to 50 meters in length.
All berths are provided with water and electrical connection, services to which must be added the travel lift, ramps and various technical services in the dock. All these services in the dock are managed by Capo d’Anzio SpA, a company established in 2010 with the aim of promoting and managing the port of the city of the same name as well as carrying out the infrastructure and functional works for the service.
Due to the proximity of the city, boaters can also take advantage of additional services such as bars, restaurants, stores, and laundry.
The port of Anzio is clearly renovated, but it retains all the flavor of a port town that has nothing to do with modern ports or commercial centers. The establishments on the ports and side streets where local delicacies can be enjoyed are characteristic. Boaters will find plenty of opportunities in this area between the famous beaches for tourists and Romans who come down on weekends, the ferry service to Ponza, and the many activities organized during the summer period in which the port of Anzio gets crowded with people and there is a lot of activity.
