Imperia: marina of Liguria

Imperia’s port infrastructure is located within the historic basin of Porto Maurizio. It is one of the largest and best equipped marinas in the Mediterranean and offers boaters 1,293 berths for the berthing of vessels from 5 to 90 meters length. The area of the entire port basin encloses an area of 268,000 square meters.

The facility has 5 floating docks, which run perpendicular to the Aicardi promenade, and spaces dedicated to recreational boating.
La Anselmi cove quay (formerly used for the berthing of merchant-type ships) is to date allocated to the yachts.
There are also fixed docks within the new St. Lazarus Basin.

The Porto Maurizio facility in Imperia aims to position itself as one of the largest tourist ports of call in the Mediterranean and a reference point for modern boating. For this, it has been the subject of a project to expand and modernize the existing marina, which, while maintaining the existing ports infrastructure, has scope to add new facilities inspired by futuristic and innovative principles, while maintaining respect for the surrounding landscape context.

The project to expand the Liguria Marina in Porto Maurizio, which has already led to the modernization of the current infrastructure, also includes the construction of urban spaces that will act as a bond between the port area and the city. Prominent among these are the“Hall of the Sea” building complex and a new Yatch Club aimed at also housing port offices, although the construction of the new works has not yet been completed.

To complete the setting that surrounds the marina of Porto Maurizio, mention should also be made of the sandy beach that, with its many bathing establishments located at the foot of the medieval village, make Porto Maurizio an ideal destination for boaters.

Historical background

Porto Maurizio’s seafaring tradition dates back to medieval times when the village was already an autonomous municipality whose economy was based on the production and trade of olive oil across the Mediterranean. Although autonomous, the municipality always remained under the area of influence of the nearby powerful Republic of Genoa until the period of Napoleonic occupation. Following its annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, Porto Maurizio was merged with Oneglia and other surrounding villages in 1923 to formtoday’s Imperia.
