TheGrumo landing place in the municipality of Lierna has replaced the old port, once a reference for navigation on Lake Como. The port consists of two floating docks on which 50 berths are arranged for even large boats. The public part is located toward the shore while the private part looks toward the lake. The old port has protective masonry and can accommodate 19 boats. A large buoy field is located at Castello at which there is a pier for temporary boat mooring for up to 4 hours.
The entire area is characterized by afternoon breezes from quadrant III and IV that occur more modestly than in the upper lake. Strong westerly winds (Menaggino) can occur in conjunction with storm events. For the old port conspicuous point is the imposing seminary built halfway up the coast, above the harbor. The structure of the new port is easily identifiable coming from the south; from the north it is necessary to pass the built-up area of Grumo to be able to make out its outline. The Castello buoy field is clearly visible coming from the south, while conspicuous approaching from the north is the castle itself.
The village of Lierna takes its name from the Latin word hibernare as evidence of the mildness of the climate. The municipality consists of three hamlets: Grumo to the south, Castello and Bancola to the north. Worth seeing are the Church of Sant’Ambrogio and the Romanesque Church of Saints Maurice and Lazarus in the small hamlet of Castello to the north of Lierna, a fortified bulwark that sits on a small peninsula.
Close to the ancient core of Lierna is Riva Bianca beach, one of the largest bathing beaches on Lake Como, composed of white pebbles. For those who love mountains and hiking, the Sentiero del Viandante (Wayfarer’s Trail ), which connects Lecco to Colico, passes through Lierna.
Lierna is known as the wine country, thanks to its vineyards and wineries from which come out such prized wines as the Bianco and Rosรฉ di Lierna. The cuisine offers tasty dishes including misultin, salted and sun-dried agoni, a typical specialty of Lake Como, which are served with polenta.
