Porto di Campomarino di Maruggio

Campomarino di Maruggio, better known to local residents and not as Marina di Maruggio, represents the hamlet of the Taranto municipality of the same name that is populated only during the summer period.

The port of this hamlet overlooking the Ionian-Salentine coast represents the only port facility on the stretch of coast from Porto Cesareo to Taranto.

The port of Campomarino di Maruggio is a harbor of refuge, protected by a breakwater of about 400 m and a breakwater of 230 m. Inside we find a central pier that bisects the body of water, forming the fishing dock to the east and the tourist dock to the west.

The entire port area of Campomarino is protected by an approximately 350 m long breakwater pier and a 250 m long sub-breakwater pier. Access for boats is quite dangerous in winds of the II and III quadrants mainly due to the presence of rocks near the mouth and shoals near the inner quay of the breakwater pier.

In the immediate vicinity of the central area of the inlet there is a seabed of about 1.5 m while laterally, the presence of some sandbars have reduced the seabed to about 80 cm. Boats with a draught greater than 1 m must take special care.

The port of Campomarino di Maruggio can be divided into two areas: on the left side is the fishing port and on the right side vie is the Blue dock, the marina that accommodates up to 300 berths up to 20 m in length. Both areas are the same size and are bordered by a restaurant that occupies an extended wing. The marina is the town’s promenade area in addition to the nearby Piazzale Italia.

In particular, the pier offers a very impressive panoramic view of the sea. The inner dock is also a very nice place for walking and is also better maintained than the pier.

The marina is also characterized by the presence of a large square in front used as a stage for numerous concerts and performances during the summer. Next to the fishing port, on the other hand, is a square that is home to a market during the summer season.

The dock, managed by the company Torre Moline SpA, has several downsides related mainly to the presence of rotting sand and algae that give off a nauseating odor with southerly winds compounded by the need to dredge the seabed.

As early as 2012, the Apulia Region had warned the company to provide for the removal of algae and the cleaning of the port area, an operation to which the company responded by not conducting a public tender, but by placing some means in the port area functional, however, only for the removal of sand from the overflow pier
