The Port of Monopoli
The port of Monopoli, is recognized along with the Ports of Barletta, one of the oldest and most famous ports on the east coast of Puglia. It is a structure that boasts a very ancient history that has even attracted multiple archaeological studies, following the various of traces testifying to the passage of ancient peoples.
The landing place was subject to a reputation that was not easy over the years because of the very limited port of call it could offer. This was as a result of a particularly dangerous coastline that drew it as a very sheltered anchorage, and difficult at anchorage for boat types with a merchant cut.
Thereafter, the port, saw the succession of a number of improvement works, which over the years managed to make people forget the name by which it was recognized at the beginning of the millennium; Port Aspro. The works, which saw their greatest manifestation, after World War II, saw an improvement but obviously within the limits of the possibilities of the seabed and the economic resources of the place.
It is a fact that the Port of Monopoli, has always managed to enjoy great respect, especially from the locals, who live a lot on the activity of sailors or otherwise own boats for seafaring identity or tourist cut.
The structure, as of today, is protected by two main piers; the Margherita Pier and the Tramontana Dam. However, the latter is not approachable due to the presence of a rocky escarpment and because of its elbow shape. The ports remain subject to some hazards, such as the shoal in the Punta del Trave, especially at low tide.
The maximum length of ships that can moor, is 110 meters, but as a rule, these are tourist ships and no more than one call is scheduled at the same time. First and foremost for safety, but also to allow entry and space for at least 80 boats, within the area.
The seabed is very muddy, but also has rocky areas, thus compromising maneuverability and landing in some areas, or otherwise to be done with great caution. Caution that is also well signaled when entering ports in particularly windy conditions due to the easterly and sirocco winds.
The Port of Monopoli, is an important wrinkle in the ancient Apulian profile, always attracting the charm of a city that makes boats and marine life, its first identity. It guarantees hospitality and basic services, despite its ancient and fascinating profile.
