Porto di Filicudi

The Port of Filicudi is located in an inlet north of Cape Graziano, where a concrete pier 55 meters long and 12 meters wide has been built. Depths are on the head of 9 meters and on the sides of 6 meters.

There are bollards and fenders that provide a way for small boats to moor, having good shelter in third quadrant winds and mediocre shelter in second and fourth quadrant winds. Attention must be paid to the submerged breakwater between the dock and the slip. Also dangerous is the shoal at Cape Graziano, which is 1.80 meters deep.

The eastern side of the pier is intended for mooring hydrofoils, in the iron portion. The remaining part of the wharf can accommodate pleasure and fishing boats, if they do not impede line boats. The west side accommodates pleasure, fishing and traffic boats.

The port area has a slipway, water intakes, cranes, electricity, fuel station, storage, and mooring services.

Theisland of Filicudi has an area of 9.7 km² and is part of the Aeolian Islands archipelago. The municipality to which it belongs is that of Lipari (ME). Its name in ancient times was Phoenicusa, meaning rich in ferns, which is actually a dwarf palm that is still found on the island today.

The extinct volcano Fossa Felci (774 meters) is the highest mountain on the island. There are seven other extinct volcanoes, characterized by strong erosion. The population is about 250 (3000 in summer), located in the three towns of Filicudi Porto, Pecorini Mare and Valdichiesa, joined by the only paved road that runs along the island. Many and very branched are the mule tracks.

There is another locality, called Stimpagnato, but it is inhabited only in summer, when there are tourists. The name of the inhabitants of the island is filicudari. There are caper and fig crops to support the local economy, although of course the main wealth comes from tourism. There are not many professional fishermen, instead amateur fishing is popular.

A section of the Aeolian Archaeological Museum is located in Filicudi, where all the artifacts found in the excavations at Capo Graziano, as well as from other archaeological sites on the Aeolian islands, have been collected. In fact, the archaeological site of Capo Graziano is very important for what has been discovered: in the Neolithic period there was a rich obsidian industry and processing on the island, traces of which have been found.

An art biennial is organized in the locality of Fossetta. Filicudi is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. A regional park has also been established in an area of the island.
