Porto di Gela

The ports of Gela is a port of refuge for small boats and local fishing vessels. The harbor is bordered by two converging piers and consists internally of a shore quay and an additional docked pier from the outer Levant pier. The dock designated for pleasure craft is the Levante dock occupied by local boats while transit berthing is allowed near the shipyard. It offers 120 berths of up to 20 meters in length and 4.5 meters draft. The gas station is located along the North Quay and refueling is limited to daylight hours. In ports there are water and electric power outlets, 140-ton slipway, and mechanical assistance. To replenish the galley, it is necessary to reach the city.

Conspicuous points on approach are the oil port dock and the ANIC refinery funnels in addition to the town of Gela behind the harbor. Exposed to Libeccio and Scirocco winds requires caution in and around the ports due to frequent silting. The access channel to the dock is not well marked, and boats with a draft greater than 3 meters may enter the ports only during daylight hours. The harbor is well sheltered although strong winds from the south could create discomfort.

Gela is located on the southern coast of Sicily positioned on a long hill parallel to the coast overlooking to the south the wide gulf of the same name. L’economia della città è centrara sull’industria petrolifera e gli impianti di trivellazione. I he municipal territory includes a coastline stretching 24 km from the mouth of the Dirillo River to the mouth of the Comunelli River, but the coast east of the city is not swimmable due to the presence of the petrochemical complex. The west coast, on the other hand, is rich in fine golden sandy beaches, the Federico II promenade with equipped bathing establishments, the beaches of Macchitella, Roccazzelle, Manfria and Piana marina very popular with surfers thanks to the constant breeze that passes through them. At 10 km from Gela under the Tower of Manfria the coast becomes high and jagged with small hidden beaches.

Gelese gastronomic tradition is affected by the influences of the various civilizations that have dominated the area (Greeks, Arabs, Normans). Le wheat preparations constitute a specialty of this area. Numerous are the fish specialties while among the sweets Worth mentioning are the ricotta ravioli, the almond pastries, i ricotta cannoli and i mostaccioli.
