The Port of Pozzallo
The Port of Pozzallo is a port facility that is recognized as one of the most important in the province of Ragusa and in the whole of Sicily. It is a primarily commercial port since its inception was designed in order to accommodate the trade of more than five hundred thousand tons of goods per year.
Soon, these numbers were exceeded, with the volume tripling to date, partly due to exponential growth in trade. The latter, also due to the presence, nearby, of Malta and the strategic location with respect to North Africa and its possible connections.
In addition, and as a result of this ever-increasing reputation, the port has become home to the Port Authority. The traffic of passenger and merchant ships that the port sees, has seen the need to undertake some restructuring works to better accommodate the multiplicity of ‘vessels. In fact, the space is also used by fishing boats, pleasure boats and service craft, for a combined total of about 150.
The port structure consists of a breakwater to the southeast, and a pier to the south. The pier, boasts a length of at least 600 meters that manages to provide berthing for ships of at least 9.5 draft. Services offered are fuel supply, drinking water and electricity. In addition, there is a self-propelled crane and travel lift service.
Thanks to its commercial profile that sees theanchoring of continuous passing ships, the port provides service, maintenance and repair as well as indoor storage.
Despite its commercial identity, the port has, as described, dedicated spaces for recreational boats as well. In order to better accommodate these different types, access to the port has been differentiated. Access to the commercial docks is prohibited to recreational boats, except with permission from theMaritime Authority.
In fact, a floating dock , at the of the underwater pier, has been dedicated for boats that are not commercial.
With a sandy and muddy bottom, the area available to the entire facility also saw the emergence of an anchorage adjacent to the ports themselves in order to ensure safe mooring for passing boats, including small ones.
The port of Pozzallo is a qualified landmark of Ragusa and Sicilian ports facilities, and is renowned for its weight in the country’s mercantile activities. Due to its commercial activities and also its maritime aptitudes for pleasure boats, it is highly exploited by the maritime population of the area, which recognizes its reputation.
