The island of Salina is part of the Aeolian Islands archipelago in the province of Messina in Sicily. The island is the second largest after Lipari of the seven that make up the archipelago and measures about 26 kmยฒ.
Salina is rocky, has two extinct volcanoes and lives mainly from grape growing and tourism; the island was the setting for the 1994 film Il postino starring Massimo Troisi.
The Aeolian Islands are popular with sea-loving tourists, and the second main landing place on the island of Salina is the small port of Rinella. The landing place has a pier about 100 meters long that is docked on the east side to which both scheduled ships and those of passing boaters dock.
The areas reserved for boating are exclusively at the buoy off the east and west reefs, where there is a redoubtable buoy field protected from the winds. Access to the mooring area is provided by an all-day shuttle service, and the surface area is approximately 2200 mยฒ.
Care must be taken at the entrance to the jetty, because there is a shoal in the western part. The sea floor is sand, and it is also possible to anchor on the alignment that is on the north side of the Punta del Perciato stacks.
The Faraglione is a typical image of the Aeolian islands and is one of the most striking places in the entire archipelago; it is a natural arch created in volcanic rock and is one of the most beautiful spots for scuba diving.
Diving in the shoal of Punta Perciato is one of the many reasons that lead tourists to visit the island of Salina incessantly. The shoal is very extensive and runs parallel to the very rugged coastline. One can admire sponges, posidonia, sea fans and all kinds of fish.
In 1980 the Salina Nature Park was established and since 1981 the Two Mountains Reserve, that is, the two extinct volcanoes. Rinella is a fishing village and has a very distinctive beach of pebbles and black sand.
In the marina there are caves carved into the tuff that were once used by fishermen as a shelter for boats, and near the marina’s docked pier the seabed reaches a maximum depth of 4 meters.
In the sea floor of the Aeolian Islands there are still volcanic phenomena, which consist of emanation of vapors and gases that when particularly pronounced completely change the sea floor.
Rinella offers many recreational opportunities, is a well-equipped village, and is the second most important ports on the island of Salina after Santa Marina Salina.
