Description

Marina della Giudecca is the dock on the island of the same name located in the Giudecca Canal, a natural continuation of St. Mark’s Basin. The dock, like the entire island, has always been an integral part of Venice and its history is closely linked to that of the Venetian capital especially from a nautical point of view: there are, in fact, no other places to moor your boat and visit Venice if you exclude Giudecca.

This landing is equipped with a berth connected to a number of craft facilities related to boating, including the shipyard of the celebrated winner of the historic regatta, Crea, who is still engaged in building traditional boats.

Giudecca is a set of eight interconnected islands located in the southern part of the historic center of Venice. The wide channel of the same name divides the island from the Sestiere of Dorsoduro of which it is administratively part.

Originally there was a vaporetto to connect the two sides of the canal and it was called the Palanca from the amount that had to be paid in order to ferry whose name has remained in today’s vaporetto stop at Giudecca.

Formerly known by the name of Spinalonga, probably because of its elongated fish-bone shape, according to some versions it would derive its current name from the first Jewish ghetto on the island, only later moved to Cannaregio, or from the ancient Venetian zudegà, giudicato, in connection with a sentence by which the Republic granted land in the ninth century to some families as compensation for damages suffered in an unjust exile.

Finally, a further version brings the present toponym of Giudecca closer to the activity of leather tanners who used certain vegetable substances obtained from bundles or shrubs. Which in the area of Veneto and Trentino are referred to by the words zuèc, zueccam, zuecchi and other similar ones.

The dock covers an area of 30,000 square meters totally dedicated to boat design, construction and care. There are about 460 usable berths for vessels not exceeding 20 meters in length. It is a full Venetian-style dock whose seabed is sandy and whose depths reach 3-4 m.

Given the strategic importance of this dock, Marina della Giudecca offers several services to boaters of all ages and backgrounds: fuel station near the Stuky Mill, wifi, drinking fountain; slipway up to 20 t; fixed crane up to 20 t; travel lift; outdoor/covered storage; engine repair; electrical and electronic repairs; wood, fiberglass and steel hull repairs; wi-fi service; guarding from 07 a.m. to 9 p.m.; divers; garbage pickup; restrooms; from grocery to ice resale
