Una famosissima bufala del web racconta di una comica conversazione radio fra il comandante di una portaerei americana e i due guardiani di un faro della Galizia. I due spagnoli chiedono alla portaerei di accostare per evitare una collisione ma, il baldanzoso capitano statunitense, intima agli spagnoli di modificare la loro rotta, vista la dimensione della sua portaerei. La barzelletta finisce dopo un paio di botta e risposta al fulmicotone con i due spagnoli che rispondono al capitano di fare ciรฒ che vuole, visto che l’oggetto con il quale erano in rotta di collisione era un faro posizionato sulla terraferma.
Una evidente finzione che ha perรฒ costretto la Marina statunitense a pubblicare una smentita sul loro sito.
Nessuna smentita รจ invece possibile per quanto รจ realmente capitato al capitano dell’Iyanough, che ha confuso barche a vela e un palo con delle boeย portando un traghetto con 48 passeggeri a impattare contro un frangiflutti a folle velocitร .
L’incredibile vicenda si รจ svolta al largo degli Stati Uniti nella serata di venerdรฌ 16 giugno (ora locale). L’Iyanoughย stava percorrendoย l’ultimo viaggio di giornata, da Nantucketย (isola di Martha’s Vineyard) a Hyannis (Massachusets), con a bordo 48 passeggeri, 6 membri dell’equipaggio e 3 addetti alla ristorazione.ย 15 di loro avrebbero conclusoย il viaggio in elicottero, raggiungendo la terraferma per andare in ospedale.
Le condizioni meteo, come confermato dalla Steamship Authority, vedevano un vento di 30-35 nodi con visibilitร diminuita da nebbia e pioggia. Niente di proibitivo comunque, tanto che il tragitto di per sรฉ non ha creato difficoltร all’equipaggio.
Alla base del singolare errore c’รจ un fraintendimento nell’utilizzo del radar da parte del capitano. Il traghetto ha regolarmente superato la boa che segnala le 2500 yard (2286 metri) di distanza dal porto di Hyannis, come segnalato al servizio di sicurezza. A quel punto il normale tragitto avrebbe previsto il superamento della Boa numero 4 ( a 32 nodi di velocitร standard) per poi virare a dritta e passare tra la Boa 5 e la Boa 6.
Qui iniziano i guai per l’Iyanough. Seconda la ricostruzione della Steamship Authority, il capitano ha controllato sul radar la posizione delle boe, confondendole con altri oggetti. Alla base del fraintendimento una serie di sfortunate coincidenze. Il frangiflutti non rientrava nel radar perchรฉ sommerso da onde alte fino a 8 piedi, mentre un palo abbastanza alto da rimanere in superficie รจ stato rilevato dall’apparecchio. Poco piรน lontane erano ormeggiate due barche a vela, a una distanzaย simile a quella tra la Boa 5 e la 6.
Il capitano ha quindi osservato il radar e pensato che il palo fosse la Boa numero 4, le barche a vela le Boe 5 e 6. Come d’abitudine, ha effettuato la manovra per avvicinarsi al canale principale del porto, la velocitร standard, come giร detto, in quel tratto รจ di 32 nodi, viene ridotta successivamente per l’ingresso nell’area portuale. Peccato che il traghetto non fosse dove pensava di essere, era molto piรน vicino e si stava dirigendo contro il frangiflutti.
Appena si รจ accorto della situazione, il capitanoย ha provato unaย “panic stop”. Ovviamente era troppo tardi; l’impatto con il frangiflutti รจ stato inevitabile.
L’incidente ha portato a 15 feriti, nessuno grave. La Guardia Costiera li ha trasportati in elicottero fino all’ospedale, dove nessuno รจ stato in pericolo di vita e tutti sono stati rilasciati dopo aver ricevuto le cure mediche di rito. Le altre persone a bordo invece sono state portate a riva suย un’altra imbarcazione, questa volta senza incontrare nuovi frangiflutti.
I test effettuati sul comandante e sul pilotaย non hanno rilevato tracce di droga o alcool.ย Entrambi vantano decenni di esperienza, e per questo un errore cosรฌ grossolano risulta quasi inspiegabile. La Steamship Authority ha deciso di sospenderli dal loro incarico fino alla fine delle indagini, che sono ancora in corso. L’Iyanough, dal canto suo, dovrebbe tornare a portare passeggeri verso la fine di agosto. Con un radar aggiornato e un comandante piรน fortunato, si spera. D’altronde “รจ meglio un comandante fortunato diย uno bravo”. E se lo diceva Napoleone…
