Non ci sbilanciamo a dire che รจ la barca piรน bella di tutti i tempi, ma certamente รจ una delle piรน iconiche. Il J Class Endeavour torna alla ribalta in questi giorni perchรจ รจ in vendita, ma รจ davvero una barca senza tempo, bellissima aldilร di ogni moda. La speranza di chi l’ha messa in vendita รจ che trovi un nuovo armatore allettato dalla partecipazione dei J Class alla regata organizzata da Coppa America nel 2017 a Bermuda. Un evento importante, che vedrร le barche storiche tornare nello scenario della America’s Cup per cui erano state originariamente disegnate e costruite. Endeavour costa 20 milioni di Euro, cifra difficile anche solo da immaginare, ma calcolare il suo valore, aldilร del prezzo, รจ ancora piรน difficile.
Endeavour รจ stata costruita da Camper & Nicholsons nel 1934 su commissione di Sir Sopwith, magnate dell’industria degli aeromobili e dichiarata al tempo “la barca perfetta” da Nat Herreshoff, architetto navale le cui barche hanno vinto tutte le America’s Cup tra il 1890 e il 1920 (e inventore delle regola universale della competizione – insomma, non il primo arrivato). La perizia di Camper & Nicholson, unita alle conoscenze tecniche di Sir Sopwith, ha fatto dell’Endeavour fin dalla sua concezione una barca innovativa, e non a caso รจ stata l’unica ha battere il Rainbow e ad avvicinarsi davvero a riporate l’America’s Cup nel Regno Unito. Scafo e albero in acciaio, verricelli a quattro velocitร , il primo genoa quadrilatero (poi adottato da tutti i J Class) e nuovi tagli anche per lo spinnaker sono solo alcune delle innovazioni introdotte con Endeavour nel mondo delle imbarcazioni a vela.
Al suo debutto nelle regate dell’America’s Cup del 1934 Endeavour dimostrรฒ la propria superioritร , pur non vincendo in assoluto. L’equipaggio professionista che la doveva condurre entrรฒ in sciopero alla vigilia delle competizioni e Sopwith si affidรฒ a degli amatori, che la portarono comunque a vincere due scontri diretti con Rainbow. I successivi 50 anni di storia della barca fanno male al cuore solo a raccontarli: l’armatore la fece competere ancora fino al 1938, ma la mise poi in disarmo nei cantieri di Camper & Nicholsons, dove rimase dieci anni in abbandono per finire messa in vendita per la demolizione. Qualche anima pia decise di risparmiare lo scafo, e spogliรฒ solo la chiglia per il piombo. Ridotta giร male, negli anni ’70 Endeavour affondรฒ alla foce di un fiume sull’Isola di Wight diventando un vero e proprio relitto, ancora una volta salvato da qualcuno che ne riconosceva il valore piรน che il prezzo: un gruppo di carpentieri la recuperรฒ e acquisto per poche decine di sterline. Ma i lavori da fare erano troppi, e la abbandonarono di nuovo nei pressi di Southampton.
Nel 1984 una donna entrรฒ nella vita di Endeavour: Elizabeth Meyer la acquistรฒ e con la consulenza del suo primo armatore, Sir Sopwith, la ricostruรฌ completamente (spendendo quasi 10 milioni di dollari), dando nuova vita a lei e a tutta la categoria dei J Class. Nel 1989 letteralmente decine di migliaia di persone affollarono le banchine per vedere di nuovo le signore del mare regatare una contro l’altra: una nuova stagione era cominciata, e il resto รจ storia (e giร poesia).
