Torna da protagonista Vestas 11th Hour Racing. Dopo il disastroso naufragio dello scorsa edizione lโequipaggio guidato dallo skipper statunitense Charlie Enright รจ stato il primo a tagliare la linea dโarrivo a Lisbona, 1870 miglia e una settimana dopo la partenza da Alicante della prima tappa del giro del mondo per equipaggi. A chiudere il podio dietro di loro, in ordine: gli spagnoli di MAPFRE e terzi i franco/cinesi di Dongfeng Race Team.
Un arrivo spettacolare nella capitale portoghese, con il traguardo sul fiume Tago, a breve distanza dal centro della cittร . Per chiudere le pratiche della tappa dโesordio, lโequipaggio dello scafo blu e azzurro ha impiegato 6 giorni, 2 ore, 6 minuti e 45 secondi. A lui vanno i primi 8 punti in palio (7+1 punto bonus per la tappa).
Una vittoria ancora piรน di soddisfazione per gli uomini del team dalla doppia bandiera -americana e danese. Un paio di giorni fa, a bordo si รจ rotto un tubo di collegamento che porta acqua di mare ai ballast (le cisterne laterali riempite sul lato di sopravvento per ridurre lo sbandamento dello scafo) riversando nella barca 800 litri di acqua.
Dopo un avvio a fasi meteorologicamente alterne, le fasi finali della tappa sono state caratterizzate da arie sempre piรน leggere, che hanno avvantaggiato gli inseguitori che, complice la corrente del fiume da risalire per raggiungere la cittร lusitana: Gli spagnoli di Mapfre sono riusciti a rosicchiare 20 delle 34 miglia che li distanziavano dal leader nelle ultime ore di navigazione. Tuttavia la situazione รจ andata via via peggiorando e sia Xabi Fernandez, lo skipper dell Volvo Ocean 65 iberico, sia il francese Charles Caudrelier, a capo dellโequipaggio franco/cinesei di Dongfeng Race Team hanno dovuto ingaggiare una battaglia contro la corrente sfruttando ogni minimo refolo dโaria per riuscire a giungere allโarrivo. Alla fine il distacco tra i due รจ stato di soli 15 minuti.
Se la statistica ha un valore per predire il futuro, le cose a questo punti si mettono bene per Charlie Enright. I due precedenti skipper americani che si sono aggiudicati la tappa dโesordio -John Kostecki, su illbruck nel 2001-02, e Paul Cayard su EF Language nel 1997-98- hanno poi portato a casa la vittoria finale sullโintero giro.
โAbbiamo ancora tanto mare da navigare ma questo รจ stato davvero un buon inizioโ, ha dichiarato Charlie Enright appena arrivato in banchina. โSiFi (Simon Fisher, il navigatore, ndr,) ha fatto davvero un ottimo lavoro, non ne ha sbagliata una, ma รจ stato difficile seguire il suo schema fino alla fine, quando ci siamo trovati anche ad arrancare contro la corrente che ci voleva riportare verso la foce!โ
โSiamo soddisfatti del risultato, รจ una buona partenza, esattamente quello che ci aspettavamo. Siamo davvero feliciโ, ha detto Xabi Fernรกndez, una volta a terra. โDobbbiamo riconoscereโ, ha aggiunto lo skipper spagnolo โche Vestas si รจ mossa bene sin dallโinizio e noi non lโabbiamo piรน vista. In compenso siamo stati soddisfatti di come abbiamo gestito le 12 ore di fortunale subito fuori da Gibilterraโ.
In effetti negli oltre 30 nodi che hanno spinto fuori dal Mediterrano la flotta dei sette concorrenti, lโesperienza di Mapfre, alla sua seconda partecipazione alla Volvo Ocean Race, si รจ fatta notare. Il team guidato da Fernรกndez ha inanellato piรน manovre di chiunque altro per restare nella zona con aria piรน forte, guadagnando cosรฌ la seconda posizione che non ha lasciati piรน fino al traguardo Di Lisbona.
Ripetente anche lโequipaggio terzo classificato, sempre guidato dal francese Charles Caudrelier che ha giudato la prima parte di regata, per poi finire nelle retrovie appena arrivato in Atlantico e riuscendo a riconquistare la terza posizione a discapito di AkzoNobel, a sole 220 miglia dallโarrivo. โร stato molto difficile e complicatoโ, ha dichiarato il velista dโoltralpe, โle previsioni del tempo e la realtร erano spesso contrastanti e ciรฒ ha reso la prova ancora piรน interessanteโ.
Raggruppate a coppie le altre quattro imbarcazioni in regata. Primo dei debuttanti Akzo Nobel che ha preceduto di una quarantina di minuti il team di Hong Kong Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag. Molto sotto tono la prova degli olandesi di Team Brunel guidato dal veterano Bowe Bekking, il piรน esperto skipper di Volvo Ocean Race con sette edizioni nel suo curriculum, in regata con lโobiettivo di conquistarne una alla sua ottava prova. A chiudere il gruppo lโequipaggio di Turn the Tide on Plastic, condotto dalla velista britannica Dee Caffari e portacolori dellโOnu. Nonostante l apartenza da sparo: hanno guidato la flotta durante le prime miglia dopo Alicante, il team impegnato anche per sostenere le campagne contro lโinquinamento da plastica degli oceani, ha mostrato di dover ancora ottimizzare la macchina per poter competer alla pari con il resto dei concorrenti.
La prossima tappa, 7000 miglia da Lisbona a Cittร del Capo (Repubblica Sud Africana), partirร domenica 5 novembre.
